We absolutely love everyone’s motivation come January. People are ready to work hard and improve their health and fitness. Sadly, almost all who aim for the “New Year-New You” resolution will fall short of achieving this new idea of living a healthy lifestyle. So, what happens? Here are 5 common mistakes people make when attempting to make this major change in their life.

  1. I can do this on my own- Majority of people try to make these changes on their own by following some internet fad diet, and joining the closest, cheapest gym they can find. The problem with this is, they are not held accountable and they don’t have a support group. This means nobody is there to check in on them and there isn’t anyone right next to them going through the same struggles and Bright Spots. By February or March, most people have lost all motivation and fallen back into old routines and habits.
  2. Information overload – A lot of people research nutrition or training systems, or just try to follow a regime of a friends. The problem with this is, there is far too much information out there, both good and bad. We believe Nutrition and Fitness should be simple. If things get too complicated people will get lost in it all making it easy to just give up. Consistency is HUGE when it comes to Nutrition and Fitness and how can you be consistent when you are jumping from one diet to the next?
  3. It’s all or nothing– The worst thing you can do is go from 0 to 100 overnight. This means cutting everything out of your diet and trying to eat extremely clean. This also means going from the couch to the gym 6-7 times per week. These outrageous changes just aren’t sustainable for the long haul. Your Body and your mind will just say “what the hell are you doing to me” and they will both shut down. BOOM once again we are back to same old routines and habits. The key is to create new healthy HABITS. Slowly make changes to develop new healthy habit’s both in nutrition and fitness. This is by far the most successful way to do things. There are no “quick fixes” we are all in this for the long haul.
  4. Not Allow yourself to make mistakes– A lot of people are far too hard on themselves. Sometimes a long hard week can lead to missing the gym and a lot of fast food. Hey this isn’t the end of the world. We are all human, and we are all going to make mistakes. All we need to do is talk to someone you trust in, and this is much easier with that support group or accountability coach I was talking about in #1. I’m sure they can relate and guide you right back to the healthy path. Forgive yourself, shake it off, and get right back on track.
  5. Setting non-realistic goals– This kind of goes along with #3. Its super common for people to make goals that just aren’t realistic. Then, when they struggle to achieve those goals it’s easy to get frustrated and quit. That’s why it’s crucial to get with a professional.  Professionals know the fitness journey really well, like a mechanic knows how to fix your car.  Right? They can look at your current situation and create a realistic plan that will involve short term goals.  Yes, short term goals leading to the long-term goal. You will be amazed on how hitting these small milestones will fuel that motivation fire.
